Anchuli Felicia King’s WHITE PEARL performed at STC

The incredible emerging talent Anchuli Felicia King will have her play WHITE PEARL premiere at Sydney Theatre Company in October, 2019.

Set in Singapore, WHITE PEARL centres on a leading skin whitening company, and the fallback that occurs when they release an unintentionally racist advertisement. The play deals with the complexities of colourism and racism within Asia, and represents an important push towards theatre that allows spaces for genuine diversity and multicultural voices.

This is something that the playwright takes very seriously;

“People often talk about increased diversity on stage in terms of its social function – and of course, as a necessarily local art form, theatre should reflect the diverse community it serves. Yet something that often gets lost in the conversation is that diversity actually makes the art better!”

King’s voice is original and unashamedly honest, inflecting the play with surprising twists, wicked comedy and her own brutal honesty.

The new Australian work is a co-production with National Theatre of Parramatta.
