Helena Brooks is an award-winning film and television director.

In 2017 she was voted one of Idealog’s Most Creative People for her work in television.

Helena has recently directed Netflix Original series WELLMANIA starring Celeste Barber. She directed and received the “Story By” credit for THE EXHIBITIONISTS, an International Women’s Day special for the ABC. Helena has directed crime drama THE GULF, comedy DRUNK HISTORY: AUSTRALIA and was set-up director for THE BAD SEED, reviewed as the best NZ noir since TOP OF THE LAKE.

Her work also includes South Pacific Pictures’ 800 WORDS, telefeature THE BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES, HOME & AWAY and award-winning comedy FUNNY GIRLS.

Helena’s debut short film as a writer-director, HARRY & PETER IN LOVE, won Best Art Direction at the New York Short Film Festival. Her second short as a writer-director, NOTHING SPECIAL, was nominated for Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, selected for film festivals around the world and sold to Canal Plus, SBS Australia, and the Rialto Channel.

Helena studied creative writing with the late Roald Dahl, gained a B.A with a double major in Film & Philosophy, and an M.A with a double major in Screenwriting & Directing. She went on to study at masterclasses at the British Film Institute with Ridley Scott, Charlie Kaufman, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, which led to her being signed by Ridley Scott Associates, where she directed commercials. She is now based in Sydney.
