Kit Brookman is a writer and director.

Kit’s most recent work THE GREAT FIRE premiered at Belvoir in 2016.  He was also announced as the winner of the Ensemble Theatre’s inaugural playwriting commission. THE PLANT will have a season in the Ensemble’s 2017 subscription program directed by Elsie Edgerton-Till and starring Sandy Gore.

In 2013, Kit wrote and directed SMALL AND TIRED at Belvoir. The production was nominated for Best New Work, Best Actor, won Best Supporting Actress at Sydney Theatre Awards and nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Helpmann Awards and was shortlisted for 2012 Griffin Award. The play had its US premiere in 2016 in Durham, NC produced by Common Wealth Endeavors.

Other plays include A RABBIT FOR KIM JONG-IL, which premiered at Griffin Theatre in 2015 directed by Lee Lewis. He co-wrote NORA, a modern retelling of Ibsen’s A DOLL HOUSE, with Anne-Louise Sarks which premiered at Belvoir in 2014. HEAVEN has had seasons at the Old 505 Theatre, Sydney and La Mama, Melbourne and NIGHT MAYBE premiered at Stuck Pigs Squealing in 2013.

Recent directing work includes IS THIS THING ON? (with Zoe Coombs-Marr) which won Best Ensemble Cast at 2014 Sydney Theatre Awards and HEAVEN at La Mama.

Kit was the winner of the 2012 Philip Parsons Young Playwright’s Fellowship at Belvoir for his play HEAVEN. His play CLOSE was also shortlisted for Griffin Award in 2010 as well as Patrick White Award in 2011.

Kit’s writing has been published in numerous Australian journals, including HEAT, Southerly, Harvest, and Westerly. Kit studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), graduating in 2008.
