MEL PAGE

Mel Page is an award-winning set and costume designer working across theatre, opera and film both in Australia and internationally.

As costume designer her work for opera includes; INNOCENCE and TRISTAN UND ISOLDE for Festival d’Aix; THE GREEK PASSION, LEAR and MÉDÉE for Salzburg Festival; DIE TOTE STADT and DIE TEUFEL VON LOUDUN for Bayerische Staatsoper, PELLEAS AND MELISANDE for Den Norske Opera & Ballet. She has also designed the set for NOYE’S FLUDDE for Victorian Opera and set and costumes for MEFISTOFELES for Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

Mel recently designed the costumes for ON THE BEACH directed by Kip Williams and the set and costumes for A RAISIN IN THE SUN for Sydney Theatre Company. Other theatre credits include; costumes for PHAEDRA for the National Theatre, set and costume for LETHAL INDIFFERENCE for Sydney Theatre Company; BACK AT THE DOJO, TASTE OF HONEY, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, SMALL AND TIRED and MEDEA for Belvoir, MINNIE & LIRAZ and THE APOCALYPSE BEAR TRILOGY for Melbourne Theatre Company; NIGHT MAYBE for Theatreworks and internationally MEDEA for Theater Basel. Mel’s costume design credits include for CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, MARY STUART, LES LIASONS DANGEREUSES and BAAL for Sydney Theatre Company; OPENING NIGHT, STOP GIRL, JASPER JONES, IVANOV, KILL THE MESSENGER, SEVENTEEN, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, HAMLET, ANGELS IN AMERICA, STRANGE INTERLUDE, and THE PROMISE, ELEKTRA/ ORESTES for Belvoir; THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR for Malthouse Theatre & Belvoir and LA POMPEII for Malthouse Theatre. Her international theatre costume design credits include; ENGEL IN AMERIKA and DREI SCHWESTERN for Theater Basel; and LES TROIS SOEURS for L’Odeon. Dance credits include COMPLEXITY OF BELONGING and DEPTH OF FIELD for Chunky Move and set and costume for PUNCTURE for Legs on the Wall.

In 2016, Mel was the proud recipient of the George Fairfax Memorial Award.

 

 

 

In 2018 Mel designed the set for STC’s production of LETHAL INDIFFERENCE written by Anna Barnes, for Belvoir AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE directed by Anne-Louise Sarks and A TASTE OF HONEY directed by Eamon Flack and MEDEA with Theatre Basel in Switzerland.

Mel designed set and costumes for the world premiere of MINNIE & LIRAZ by Lally Katz at Melbourne Theatre Company and costumes for LEAR and MÉDÉE at the Salzburg Festival; directed by Simon Stone. Following on from 2016 designing costumes for the acclaimed production of JASPER JONES and both sets and costumes for BACK AT THE DOJO for Belvoir. She has just returned from Switzerland where she designed costumes for DIE TOTE STADT, Basel Opera and THREE SISTERS, Basel Theater.

Mel designed the costumes for Belvoir’s productions of IVANOV, KILL THE MESSENGER, SEVENTEEN and ELEKTRA/ORESTES.  Mel also designed costumes for PELLEAS for Den Norske Opera & Ballet in Denmark, PUNCTURE for Legs on the Wall, DEPTH OF FIELD for Chunky Move, VENUS IN FUR for Darlinghurst Theatre and ANGELS IN AMERICA for Basel Theater.

Mel designed costumes for Malthouse/Belvoir co-production of THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR, Belvoir’s NORA, THE GLASS MENAGERIE and A CHRISTMAS CAROL and Chunky Move work THE COMPLEXITY OF BELONGING (a co-production between Chunky Move, Melbourne Theatre Company, Melbourne Festival and Brisbane Festival).

She also designed the costumes for ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID’S CITY, HAMLET, ANGELS IN AMERICA parts I and II, SMALL AND TIRED, STRANGE INTERLUDE, AS YOU LIKE IT and THE PROMISE for the Belvoir upstairs theatre and the set and costumes for OLD MAN and MEDEA downstairs.

For the Sydney Theatre Company Mel costume designed LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES and was nominated for a Sydney Theatre Award for her designs. Mel designed the costumes for PYGMALION for STC in 2012; BAAL, a co-production between STC and Malthouse Theatre; and VS MACBETH, a co-production between STC and The Border Project; LA POMPEII for Malthouse; and NIGHT MAYBE for Theatre Works.

For The Hayloft Project Mel designed costumes on productions THE SUICIDE, THE ONLY CHILD and SPRING AWAKENING; the latter earning Mel a nomination for Best Design in the 2008 Green Room Awards. Mel designed set and costume for ASHES TO ASHES at 45 Downstairs and Lally Katz’s THE APOCALYPSE BEAR TRILOGY that was produced by Stuck Pigs Squealing and played at the MTC in association with the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

Mel set designed for NOYE’S FLUDDE for the Victorian Opera and THE SPICKS AND SPECKTACULAR for ABC and Token Events. Mel designed an installation for VISIBLE CITY, which was exhibited as a keynote project in the Melbourne Fringe in 2010.

Mel production and costume designed the web series ONE STEP CLOSER TO HOME and production designed short films GREAT ACTS OF KINDNESS and HOLLOW BONESMel also worked in the Art Department on feature films THE TENDERHOOK and MY YEAR WITHOUT SEX.
