Alice Babidge
DesignersAlice Babidge is an award winning costume and set designer across film, television, theatre and opera.
Alice recently undertook Production Design and Costume Design on THE NARROW ROAD TO THE DEEP NORTH starring Jacob Elordi and directed by Justin Kurzel. Alice’s most recent work includes the feature film BEAU IS AFRAID starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Ari Aster and FOE with Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal with director Garth Davis.
Previous film projects include THE DIG starring Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan, directed by Simon Stone, for which she was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Costume Design; NITRAM directed by Justin Kurzel which she was nominated for both Best Production and Costume Design AACTAs; TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG directed by Justin Kurzel for which she won the AACTA for Best Costume Design; HOLDING THE MAN directed by Neil Armfield; and SNOWTOWN, Kurzel’s debut feature which was selected for Critics Week at Cannes and was awarded the Special Distinction of the President.
Theatre highlights include Sydney Theatre Company’s production of THE PRESENT (dir. John Crowley) which transferred to Broadway at the Barrymore Theatre in 2017, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF directed by Benedict Andrews and YERMA directed by Simon Stone, both with the Young Vic and both recorded by National Theatre Live. YERMA transferred to the West End and Broadway in 2018. Alice designed set and costume for THE MAIDS at STC, directed by Benedict Andrews, starring Cate Blanchett, Isabelle Huppert and Elizabeth Debicki which played in New York at the Lincoln Centre Festival in 2014. Alice designed costume for GROSS UND KLEIN starring Blanchett in 2011 and in 2009 costumed 4-part adaptation of THE WAR OF THE ROSES staged at the Sydney and Perth International Art Festivals. In 2006 she costume-designed Barrie Kosky’s eight hour epic THE LOST ECHO.
Alice’s opera credits include LA TRAVIATA at Paris Opera and Ballet in 2019; HOTEL STRINDBERG for Burgtheater Vienna (Set and Costume) winner of the Nestroy award; HAMLET at Glyndebourne Festival which has travelled to Adelaide International Arts Festival and the Metropolitan Opera in NYC (Costume); PEER GYNT at Deutches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg, THE RING CYCLE at Opera Australia (Costume); CALIGULA and THE RETURN OF ULYSSES at English National Opera (Costume), THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO (Costume) and BLISS (Costume, Opera Australia Sydney/Melbourne/ Edinburgh Festival Seasons) directed by Neil Armfield.
Alice is a BAFTA-nominated costume designer, she won an AACTA award for Best Costume Design (THE TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG) and was nominated for two more. GROSS UND KLEIN won best costume at 2011 Sydney Theatre Awards and THE LOST ECHO and CAPRICORNIA were nominated for Best Costumes at the 2007 Sydney Theatre Awards. Alice and the company won a special OBIE award for YERMA on Broadway and Alice won the 2018 Nestroy Award for Best Set & Costume Design for HOTEL STRINDBERG.
